The idiom later became “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” and “an apple a day, no doctor to pay.” The current version of the phrase came about in 1922.

According to Caroline Taggart, author of “An Apple a Day: Old-Fashioned Proverbs and Why They Still Work,” the Anglo-Saxons and the Romans were aware of the health advantages of apples. The fruit also made an appearance in conventional Ayurvedic treatment, one of the earliest “whole-body” (or “holistic”) healthcare systems in the world, beginning roughly 1,500 years ago in southern Asia.
